Phillimore's' Marriages - Thurcaston cum Cropston 1561 to 1837

Thurcaston and its Registers are of singular interest and importance. The following particulars are mainly derived from Nicholl’s History of Leicestershire. Anciently called Turchitelestone and Thurkitcleston, to it was annexed the hamlet Cropston and the Chapelry of Anstey which was to be served three days a week from the mother church. In 1564 Thurcaston contained within the parish a peculiar and exempt jurisdiction extending over 24 families, one of them was in Anstey and 13 in Cropston. Richard Coton had one son Thomas (whose only child, Elizabeth, d.s p.) and 4 daus. of whom Catherine the third m. Richard Grosvenor of E(a)ton, Cheshire, and upon partition of R. Coton’s inheritance the manor and advowson of Thurcaston were allotted to Grosvenor, whose heir, Sir Richard, alienated it to William Palmer citizen of London whose s. and h. Archdale Palmer was lord thereof in 1630. Sir Francis Walsingham purchased this Rectory and presented it to the newly-founded Emmanuel College, Cambridge, out of respect for the founder, Sir Walter Mildmay.

Here, about 1490-91, was born “that learned and most reverend Hugh Latimer, D.D.,” Bishop of Worcester 1535, martyred at Oxford.

Few Leicestershire parishes have numbered more notable men among their rectors than Thurcaston. Roger de Martival archdeacon of Leicester 1294, rector of Thurcaston and dean of Lincoln, and in 1315 Bishop of Salisbury. John de Mershden, Canon of Windsor 1416 and Rector of T. where he was buried 17 Jan. 1424/5. Thomas Willet rector 1559-71, prebendary of Ely. Elias Travers the first incumbent presented by Emmanuel Coll, seems to have had official duties under the Bishop of Lincoln, Lord Keeper Williams; at whose request he solicited help from the clergy in Leicester Archdeaconry towards furnishing with books the “Old Town Hall Library” in Leicester. Richard Hill, B.D, rector 1701-1732/3 , Fellow of Emmanuel Coll. built and endowed a Free School here with elaborate “Statutes, Rules and Orders” compiled by himself in 1715. Also another at Swaffham Bulbeck (see mar. entry of his dan. in 1722 infra). Richard Hurd, 1756-76, “one of the brightest ornaments of literature,” was assistant preacher at the Rolls Chapel and at Lincoln’s Inn where his eloquence attracted “the most polite and crowded audiences that ever frequented the chapel.” He was successively Archdeacon of Gloucester 1767-74, Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry 1774-81, Bishop of Worcester 1781~1808, and Preceptor to the Prince of Wales and Duke of York, and “had the honour of declining the proffered see of Canterbury in 1783.” Lack of space forbids the mention of other notable rectors.

The earliest Register begins in 1561 ; bound in limp parchment this volume now contains 39 parchment leaves measuring 13¾ by 5 7/8 inches. It record births, baptisms, marriages and burials, generally kept separate, to 1641. Several pages are wholly or partly blank. Several leaves containing the entries for the years 1574—83 inclusive have been cut out with a sharp knife ; one leaf hangs almost separated and parts of several have been cut away, but all these last would seem to have been blank. The writing, faded in places, is generally good and legible. The volume is rubbed, dogs-eared and the covers perished ; it badly need: restoration and binding and the loose leaf should be secured its importance and interest emphasise this. The first entry is “Wa(l)ter Allin the sonne of Raphe Allin was baptized the xxii of September 1561.”

After 1609 turn on 17 leaves for the marriage entries for 1610-12 (none), 1613-14-15. Turn on four leaves for the marriage entries for 1616-17. Turn back 18 leaves for those in 1618-19. Turn forward 18 leaves for those in 1620—1626, then turn back again 18 leaves for the entries in 1627-41.

A transcript on parchment is in this volume containing all the entries for 1631.

On pages 30-36 are accounts of moneys “gathered” and “distributed to the poore.”

Volume II, records Marriages 1653 to 1753, Baptisms 1649 to 1799, Births and Burials 1653 to 1799. Burials 1678-1799 are entered separately at end of volume inverted. Each class of entry was carefully kept separate until 1707 in 1708 occurs this note, “Births and Marriages intermixed for this I take to be the Best way of Registering” (Rich. Hill, rector). In another hand is the gloss, “The worst I take it because it causes trouble and Confusion Bound in parchment boards the book contains 74 parchment leaves (also two smaller pieces of parchment mentioned infra where the entries belong, 1702-4): Twelve of these leaves have been stitched in and measure 12¼ by 7½ inches, part of the last is cut away. On a page numbered 18, following the entry of one birth in 1658, is the note :—

“John Freer the Register did not write down any more that I could ever hear of. John Freer died 1673 5 year after I came to be parson. All theis pages forgoing being written by him I have taken out of his booke and stitched them into this Booke. Ita testor Rt. Alfounder, Rectr. Ecclie.” On page 20, is “The Register from 1660 to 1668 was writen in Freer’s Booke but in a very had hand: therefore I transcribed it. And from the year beginning 1668 I have kept the Register very carefully. Rt. Alfounder.” The leaves proper to the volume measure 12¾ by 7 5/8 and, having been in careful hands, it is in excellent condition besides being beautifully kept; being especially good during Mr. Hill’s long rectorate. Almost throughout the writing is educated, good, and easily read. Some pages are blank, several about the middle where the entries at opposite ends ceased. Mr. Alfounder, rector 1668-1700/1, records extensive alterations made by him in the rectory. Curious and extra-registerial entries abound. “John Sly of Thurcaston, a poor, melancholy, mopish man was buried April 19, 1713.” 1722. Buried, Eustace Wade, aged 78, parish clerk 31 years, in which time was never absent on Lord’s day from morning and evening service. “ 1728. Memorand. that upon this Jy 28 God was pleased to raise a Mighty High wind wch generally beat a large Quantity of the wheat out of its ears even to the damage of £100 in Ansty little field as I heard a farmer guess it. And as it was in Thurcaston parish so it was in other parishes, even all over the County.”

“Nov. 19, 1763. John Cragg of Thurcaston an adult in his 75th year, being bed-rid, was privately baptized at his own request. N.B. His father and mother had been rigid Anabaptists. R. Hurd, rector.”

Notable names occuring in these registers are, Gra[sic]venor (ancestors of the Duke of Westminster) Louth, Babington (ancestors of Lord Macaulay). Bonner (of whom was the Bishop of that name), Fitzsymonds and Billers.

Volume III., Of paper in parchment boards, printed forms, Marriages 1754-1812.

Volume IV., Marriages 1813-36, printed forms.

Volume V., Marriages 1838 and still in use. None in 1837.

These registers have been transcribed by the Rev. J. E. Potts, the rector, amid Mr. E. K. Elliott, and are printed under their supervision by permission of the former.

Note.—In these abstracts the letter “A” means Anstey. “T” means Thurcaston, and “C” indicates Cropston.
